I. Program Introduction:
The Master’s program in English Language (MA) focuses on enhancing knowledge related to the nature and structure of the English language as well as its applications in teaching and learning contexts, social interaction, and cross-cultural and linguistic communication.
The program includes courses that are in line with globalization and digital transformation trends such as Computational Linguistics, Meanings in the Globalized World, Information and Communication Technology in Language Teaching and Learning, Language Center Management, etc.
Additionally, Hoa Sen University has officially introduced the course “Language Center Management” into the curriculum since 2021 to help students develop the skills to establish and manage a language center in practice, making the path to success clearer and more sustainable for each student.
1. Training Program:
The English Language Master’s program consists of 15 courses and a thesis equivalent to 60 credits, providing three types of knowledge:
- General knowledge
- Fundamental knowledge: Students gain access to compulsory knowledge about issues related to the use of the English language and research methods. Additionally, students will explore elective knowledge related to language structure, language in interaction (such as discourse or pragmatics), and language in intercultural communication.
- Specialized knowledge: The program meets students’ in-depth learning needs for one of two specialized directions: Teaching English or Translation. Specifically: Teaching English (4 courses – 12 credits and 3 elective specialized courses – 9 credits); Translation and Interpreting (4 courses – 12 credits and 3 elective specialized courses – 9 credits).
2. Duration of Training: 24 months, depending on individual conditions, with a maximum study period until successful thesis defense of 48 months.
3. Degree: Master of English Language (part of the national diploma system)
II. Enrollment Information
1. Enrollment Eligibility:
Regarding qualifications, candidates must meet one of the following conditions (a or b or c):
a) Graduated from a university (1) majoring in English Language/Literature or English Linguistics.
b) Hold a bachelor’s degree in majors such as English Language Teaching, Applied Linguistics, English and American Literature, Comparative Linguistics, American Studies, English Studies, or English Translation and Interpretation recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training; or hold a bachelor’s degree in majors such as Linguistics, Educational Management, Cultural Studies, Psychology, Education from a foreign institution, trained in English and meeting the additional knowledge requirements before the university announces the list of eligible candidates.
c) Hold a bachelor’s degree in other majors from domestic or foreign universities recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training and hold one of the following English language certificates: TOEIC score of 600 or higher, IELTS score of 5.5 or higher, TOEFL iBT score of 60 or higher; or hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in another major trained full-time abroad with English as the language of instruction, recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training, and have studied and met the additional knowledge requirements before the university announces the list of eligible candidates.
(1) In the case where candidates hold a foreign university degree, the diploma must be recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training according to regulations.
2. Application Documents:
2.1 Application dossier includes:
a) Application form for enrollment; (as per the template);
b) Copy (*) of bachelor’s degree or temporary graduation certificate; Certificate of equivalent degree confirmation from the Quality Management Department in case of foreign university-issued bachelor’s degree;
c) Copy (*) of academic transcript at the university level specifying the names of subjects, number of lessons, exam scores of each subject; for candidates seeking exemption from additional knowledge subjects, they need to submit the syllabus of the studied subjects;
d) Certificate of work experience (for candidates applying for the Business Administration major);
e) Personal resume with photo and confirmation from the human resources management agency at the workplace or the local authorities where the candidate resides, sealed with a photo; (personal resume template)
f) Health check certificate within the last 3 months;
g) Copy (*) of supplementary knowledge transcript for candidates with additional knowledge requirements;
h) Copy (*) of language exemption certificate, if any;
i) Documentation proving priority status, if any;
j) 3 portrait photos sized 3×4 taken within 6 months from the submission date (with name, date of birth written behind the photos, placed in an envelope);
k) Copy (*) of birth certificate, which candidates can submit additionally upon admission and enrollment registration;
(*) Candidates must bring the original for verification or submit a certified copy.
2.2. Application fee: 1,000,000 VND / application dossier
3. Entrance Exam Subjects:
- Discourse Linguistics: Multiple-choice and essay (120 minutes)
- English Language: Multiple-choice and essay (120 minutes)
- French Language: Multiple-choice and essay (120 minutes)
Additionally, the university also considers exempting the foreign language subject for candidates applying for admission to the English Language major at the master’s level if they have the following language certificates:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher trained full-time abroad under a French-language program, recognized by the competent authority (Quality Management Department of the Ministry of Education and Training) according to current regulations;
- Hold a bachelor’s degree under the Advanced Program Project of the Ministry of Education and Training for advanced training programs at some Vietnamese universities or hold a high-quality engineer degree (PFIEV) recognized by the Engineer Certification Committee (CTI, France), having a foreign partner issuing the same degree (with instruction in French);
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in French/Chinese/Japanese/Korean Language;
- Hold one of the following language certificates at a minimum level equivalent to A2 (European Framework):

(*Students can apply for exemption from some subjects depending on their academic transcript and syllabus of completed subjects or equivalent subjects at the undergraduate level.)
Application for enrollment: From the announcement date until April 29, 2021.
Exam date: May 15, 2021, and May 16, 2021.
Announcement of exam results, list of successful candidates: May 25, 2021 (expected).
