Hoa Sen Symposium #1
Với mong muốn cùng chia sẻ kinh nghiệm nghiên cứu, xây dựng “Hoa Sen Symposium” thường kỳ là nơi gặp gỡ và trao luận chuyên môn. Viện IDAE tổ chức Hoa Sen Symposium 1 với chủ đề:
Presentation: Floods and Household welfare: evidence from Southeast Asia
9:30am – 10:00am
Presenter: Dr. LE THI NGOC TU (Institute of Development & Applied Economics, Hoa Sen University)
Abstract: This research uses a rich panel data set of household surveys and external long-term flood data, extracted from satellite images, to complete a puzzling picture of the effects of floods on household welfare. Floodsimpose a mixed impact on households. On the one hand, the floodsreduce household incomes dependent on natural sources; while on the other hand, floods push farmers out of the fields to seek extra incomes from non-agricultural activities. In addition, the floods significantly increase some types of expenditure. The finding of a lower household subjective wellbeing score reaffirms all these results. Further, this research shows the efforts that rural households are making to cope with the effects of flooding. They employ both formal and informal coping mechanisms; however, only financial remittances are shown to be significantly effective in providing relief.
10:00am – 11:00am:
Training: Introduction to Geography Information System (GIS)
Dr. TU will provide a brief introduction and some basic practices with GIS. After this training, participants will know what GIS is and what they can do with GIS in Social science (specified in economics).
