Over 35% Increase in Candidates Registering for the 2025 Competency Assessment Exam in Ho Chi Minh City
According to the Center for Testing and Quality Assessment (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City), the 2025 Competency Assessment Exam organized by VNU-HCM has attracted significant interest from students nationwide. With over 130,000 candidates registering for the first round, this exam continues to affirm its crucial role in university admissions and student evaluation.

1. What is the Competency Assessment Exam?
The Competency Assessment Exam (CAE) organized by Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, is designed to measure candidates’ thinking, analytical, and application skills rather than just testing rote memorization like traditional exams. The test structure is developed to assess reasoning and problem-solving abilities, similar to standardized tests such as the SAT (USA) or GAT (Thailand), providing a comprehensive reflection of candidates’ competencies.
2. Increasing Participation Trend in the CAE
In 2025, the number of candidates registering for the ĐGNL exam continues to set a record, with over 130,000 participants in the first round, marking a 35% increase compared to 2024. This trend highlights the growing popularity of the ĐGNL exam in the university admissions system. In addition to the expanded admission quotas of many universities, this exam is highly regarded for its comprehensive structure, which assesses reasoning, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities rather than mere memorization of knowledge. Notably, the fact that the exam is completed in a single session helps reduce pressure and creates more favorable conditions for candidates during the admission process.
2.1 The Importance of the Competency Assessment Exam
Since its implementation, the Competency Assessment Exam has become a crucial admission method for many universities across Vietnam. By 2025, more than 100 universities and colleges will accept the CAE scores from VNU-HCM for admission, including:
- Member universities of VNU-HCM: Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, University of Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, International University, University of Information Technology…
- Other major universities: Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, Ton Duc Thang University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education…
This demonstrates the exam’s credibility within Vietnam’s higher education system, as recognized by the government. Additionally, the CAE offers candidates numerous advantages, particularly by expanding their admission opportunities across various universities and programs without being restricted by the traditional high school graduation exam. With a comprehensive evaluation approach, the exam allows students to showcase their logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and practical knowledge application rather than merely recalling theoretical concepts. It is also an ideal option for students seeking additional admission opportunities alongside their high school graduation exam scores, thereby reducing stress in this critical examination.
2.2 Advantages of the CAE Compared to the High School Graduation Exam
The Competency Assessment Exam provides several benefits to candidates due to its flexible and comprehensive approach. Unlike exams that primarily test memorization, the CAE focuses on logical reasoning, analytical skills, and problem-solving, allowing students to demonstrate their abilities more objectively. Furthermore, the exam takes place within a single session, reducing exam-related pressure compared to the multi-day high school graduation exam. Importantly, CAE scores are widely accepted by many universities, broadening admission opportunities and giving students more options that align with their strengths.
3. 2025 CAE Examination Schedule
According to the Center for Testing and Quality Assessment (VNU-HCM), the 2025 Competency Assessment Exam will be conducted in two phases, with the following schedule:

According to Tuổi Trẻ newspaper, in the second phase, the number of test locations may be reduced, mainly focusing on Ho Chi Minh City and major cities to ensure smooth and effective exam administration.
5. Structure of the Competency Assessment Exam
Starting in 2025, the Competency Assessment Exam structure has been adjusted to align with the new general education curriculum. It focuses on evaluating thinking skills, analytical abilities, and knowledge application. The exam consists of three main sections:
- Part 1: Language Use (40 questions) – Includes 20 Vietnamese and 20 English questions, assessing reading comprehension and language proficiency.
- Part 2: Mathematics, Logical Thinking, and Data Analysis (30 questions) – Tests calculation ability, logical reasoning, and data interpretation using tables and charts.
- Part 3: Scientific Thinking and Problem Solving (50 questions) – Designed to evaluate scientific reasoning and the ability to solve real-world problems in science, technology, economics, and society.
The exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions with a 150-minute time limit. Scores are calculated using a modern assessment method to ensure reliability and accuracy. The maximum score is 1,200 points, with each section worth up to 300 points.
