De Montfort University’s History of Development – Proud To Have A Special History

De Montfort University (DMU) is an energetic organization with a long history of improving people’s lives through education. Firstly founded with the name of Leicester Art University in 1870, the university has constantly developed with different names including Leicester Art and Technology College and Leicester Polytechnic University. 

The Leicester Polytechnic University was officially renamed as De Montfort University on 26th June, 1992. This chosen name acknowledges the long-lasting relationship between the university and Leicester city by paying regards to Simon de Montfort, a famous Earl of Leicester. He was an important figure in medieval English history, who founded the first parliament in 1265.

De Montfort University’s rich history and commitment to innovation in teaching and research have been foundational to its reputation for quality and distinction. Rooted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the Leicester School of Art and Technical School began training students for local industries such as boot and shoe manufacturing, furniture design and manufacturing, knitted and textile manufacturing, engineering, printing, and bookbinding, the university has continuously evolved to meet the changing demands of society.

Throughout its history, De Montfort University has upheld a diverse range of disciplines, including art, medicine, belts, footwear, physical sciences, and architecture, which are still integral to its curriculum today.
