DMU students join a talkshow with expert Andrew John Jackson, exploring global trade wars and developing strategic thinking!

1. Trade Wars and Practical Lessons for DMU Students

In this era of global integration, economic disruptions like the US-China trade war not only affect nations but also have profound impacts on businesses and consumers. With the goal of helping students engage with real-world scenarios, develop critical thinking, and strategic decision-making skills, the Hoa Sen – De Montfort program organized a conversation with speakers where students could simulate a challenging and fascinating trade war.

Under the guidance of Mr. Andrew John Jackson – Senior Executive Director at Shopee & Director at PwC Consulting, students had the opportunity to role-play as policy planners for the US, China, EU, and Vietnam/ASEAN, directly participating in negotiation rounds and making strategic trade decisions.

2. DMU Students Challenge Themselves in International Negotiation Simulations

In this simulation, students were divided into 4 groups representing:

  • USA – Implementing tariff policies and protecting domestic business interests
  • China – Dealing with trade barriers and finding ways to maintain global market share
  • EU – Developing balanced policies between parties in the trade war
  • Vietnam/ASEAN – Responding to trade war impacts and leveraging opportunities from supply chain shifts

The activity’s goals went beyond understanding international trade, helping students develop:

  • Negotiation and bargaining skills in an international environment
  • Critical thinking and economic impact analysis
  • Quick and effective decision-making under pressure
